- ✪ ✪ ✪ ✪ ✪I started seeing Dr. Shafa at the end of 2016 when I was in desperate need of a pyschiatrist/pyschopharmacologist. During intake, he asked my mother to come in for an added perspective to my situation. After my third visit, I asked Dr. Shafa if I can see him alone. He shook his head and said, "No, please bring your mother in." For the following several months this was the routine and I believed it helped me. However I wanted him to respect my privacy and I wanted 1:1 time. In June of 2017 I asked Dr. Shafa if it can just be me and him. He refused my request and asked my mother to come in. I am now being charged for multiple sessions of "Family Therapy." Furthermore, the billing specialist I spoke to - Nina - told me 'tough luck' and "don't threaten us" when I told her I plan to contest the charges with my insurance company. I've realized Dr Shafa can be warm and inviting and I think he's an okay doctor. However, his billing practices are deceptive. I was billed over $300 for a series of comprehensive urine tests which he sends out to a third-party lab, which I was not aware of considering there is a CNA who checks results in the office. Medication was also pushed and given to me from a promotional supply Doctor Shafa received. Within 3 months, this medication becomes an important part of my RX regiment but suddenly Doctor Shafa has none left. I am now forced to pay over $100/month for a medication which I was told would be available to me by him of no cost. This has been the most upsetting experience I've had with any doctor. I believe Dr. Shafa runs a questionable business and feel he should be more transparent about costs to his patients. I also believe he should train Nina to be more professional. She has a very poor attitude. I gave him two stars instead of 1 because Dr Shafa has been successful with several patients I know of. Unfortunately my experience has proven to be more detrimental to me to me over time. I completed my last visit a month ago and have moved on to a new doctor.July 29, 2017by Daniel O'Connell
